It’s not every day that one comes
across a book which affects your thoughts. And usually i consider myself very
lucky to come across such books. "The Hungry Tide" by Amitav Ghosh
has a class in itself. This book mainly is set in the Sunderbans, largely covered
by the mangrove forests.
The style of narration is long,
slow, often covering over the previous happenings until the right time. It’s
like the story and the place are inseparable. The book keeps the reader in
a sense of suspense But now where does the author over do.
Different elements like the research on Gangetic dolphin, the traditions and
beliefs of the local people, various emotions shown by different
people at different occasions, all form the gist of the story. The author
is very successful in portraying what he wants the reader
to feel.
